Monterey oil reserves (southern half of Calif central valley) profitable at $80 oil with new drilling tech. Enough deposits to end oil imports to US for decades, it's said. Promises, promises.

Venezuela may soon be shipping its crude to refineries in other countries rather than US, potentially cutting off US supply.

Pemex (Mexico) has abandoned wells in North Mex because of the drug war. Supplies to US may be cut. US may have to send in troops.

China looking to spend big money to get into Marcellus shale reserves (Appalachians) to get hands on the drilling tech to export it to their part of the world.

Clean E firms attracted $575M in 53 deals in Q3, less than half raised in yr-ago Q.

Westinghouse has handed over details of its nuke tech to China in initial part of tech transfer in HOPES of securing future biz. What kind of deal is that?

Vitrification seals nuclear waste into glass matrix to prevent leaching into environment. Kurion a startup with the tech.

Rush Limbaugh still irrational about EV's. If something helps us get off imported oil and cleans the air isn't that good for us? Driving and Oxycontin don't mix.

Senators seeking extension of clean E grants over tax credits.

Energy Sec Chu: US leadership at risk. Global high tech exports in US hit peak in '98 @ ~25% of market. Steady decline to 12-13% now. China '95-'08 went from ~6% to 20%. In '09, for first time, 51% of US patents were awarded to non-US companies. China went from 15th place to 5th in international patents. Fed support for energy R&D critical. Pharm R&D ~19%. Aerospace 11.5%. Computers, electronics 8%. Energy .03%. Stimulus provided huge down payment of additional R&D. But about to run out.

US utilities solar spending to double year over year thru '15. Over 5 GW of PV power under contract. $1B market in '10, est. $8B in '15. FSLR now holds over 40% of capacity in development. Less than 250MW now operating.

US companies earned $1.66T last Q. That's profits. That's $6T for a year, twice the fed budget. And if you hire 10M folks at avg $40k/yr (I think below median) you would spend $400B. What, 7.5% of corp profits or so? Something is really cold here. Hearts? Besides, don't employees add to your potential for growth? Let alone our country. Just thinkin.

Interior plans to fast-track process for offshore wind. What if the wind turbines suck all the wind out of the atmos? I know. They won't suck it all. But what is the wind loss after going through turbines? Climate change studies are needed.

US ethanol subsidies $7.7B in '09. Expire Dec 31. It takes 29% more fossil fuel energy to make ethanol from corn than the amount of fuel produced. And how long has this not been making any sense besides driving up food costs? Since presidential candidates have been sucked into Iowa primaries maybe. Switch grass takes 45% more. I recall W's mention of switchgrass in one state of the union.

The same study (Cornell/UC Berkeley): ethanol production in US doesn't benefit energy security, ag, economy or environment. We haven't herd from ADM or the rest of the ethanol money yet.

EPA finalized rules for CO2 sequest.

EPA rated Nissan Leaf @106MPG-equiv city, 92 country. Volt 93 in el mode. Or is it el a la mode?

$2B paid out so far for BP spill comp fund.

135 global mayors signed climate change agreement to reduce GHG's in Mexico City pact for monitoring and verification. We the people can track it on the web.

Global GHG's predicted to hit record in '10. Dipped in '08 and '09 with the recession. Fossil fuel gases in '09 fell 11.8% in Japan, 6.9% in US, 8.6% in Britain, 8.4 in Russia.

Pretty busy day in clean E-ville despite the mart's low holiday volume. Dow, of course, came back 150. I'm going to try to separate out the comps I think you should seriously consider and put them in a first tier then give you a second tier. Maybe a third.

1st tier:
FDEI ended up 14. Got down to .0102 tho. Between 200-day lines on 12 month chart. ZAAP ended up 14. Again, double topping maybe. CREE up 10. Peekin over its last 200-day line. May be a look see next couple sessions on any pullback. They're talking LED breakout for '11. Why I prefer LSCG, flat today, or EFOI, up 1, or VUOC, up 9. VLNC up 9. Broke their one month downswing and went through their 50-days. VSPC up 8, broke through their 50's (under their 200's). ELON up 8. COMV up 4, may be starting a climb. Bigger brother ENOC lost 1, stayed below $24. ABAT up 3, may be breaking out of its holding pattern. TSLA up 2 more. Hell, almost doubled in a month?! Yup. URRE up 1 more, a 6x out of August. HLXW came back 20% from whence I mentioned it this morning.

SSOL down 40. They had $2M revs 2Q and forecasting double dig growth. If I had more funds... BFRE down 18. Cellulosic eth. Slight dip under 50's, above 200's. Again, funds. CABN down 16. I think starting a climb. BCON it says down 12, but that was maybe a closing number. Maybe ended flat. Just starting a bottoming phase I think. AMEL down 11. Building for a climb. I think. ECOS down 10. It will bottom sometime someprice. AFPW, NPWZ down 9. Both developing fuel cells, AFPW already to market, NPWZ close behind. NPWZ better tech/cost. I think. SLTZ down 8. Still never herd if they got Buda Solar or not. IFXY down 3. Grid new tech, deal with ITRI. NENE flat.

2nd tier:
WBRE up 66 on 500 shares. I wouldn't want to be that buyer right now. CLTH up 40. PSRU up 25. AXTG up 20 (bought them first of the year at 10 cents and went to 17 cents). PPRW up 18. WWPW up 17 on 1k shares. CCGI up 15. SSHO up 12. OOIL, AWNE up 11.

GCHK down 27. RNNM down 23.

And finally the hoodaythunkits:
ZEON up 1900 on 1k shares. I hope that wasn't me. MMBF up 100 on 33k shares. And PWTC up 100 on 16M shares. Someone to check.

I had a stuff to write but had a long walk and cooked up some chicken veg brown rice soup and my brother called. So probably tomorrow on that. Happy T day eve y'all.

Dow up over 100. Volume normal. Irish crisis apparently over. No fighting in Korea.

PSRU up 25. PPRW up 16. ZAAP up 14 after hitting 84 cents. May be 2nd top out. IFXY up 9. CREE up 7 on upgrades. Up against last 200-day line. ELON up 7. Steady upline since August. I'd buy it for long term, though others ahead of it in preference. Like LSCG, up 1. ENOC up 2, over $24. BCON up 8. FDEI up 4. NENE flat.

SSOL down 27. HLXW down 16. I don't know many that would buy it now at .001. But I bet that's the bottom. Vertical axis wind turbines with business. SOPV down 14. SLTZ, ECOS down 10. CABN, AFPW down 9.

STUFF

Australia's largest combined cycle power plant using 97% less water, cutting emissions by half v. existing coal plants.

China in 1H spent $31B on hard assets, $23B on T bills, other US bonds.

Subsidies for fossil fuels (US) ~$72B '02-'08 v. ~$29B for clean E.

US military cost to protect Persian Gulf oil $44B in '07.

DOE '00 study: oil market cost US ~$7T in '98 dollars from '70 to '00.

Clean E stocks lost almost $400B in value this yr (about 15%). Factories expanded beyond demand. Just a matter of time for consolidation, mergers, buyouts, etc. But clean E and E efficiency will need $10T in cap investment thru '20. Solar global manufacturing capacity may reach 23.5GW in '11, 40% over demand. Wind turbine makers will increase to 64.2GW capacity, 30% over expected demand. 517 alternative E takeover deals so far in '10, avg. $75M each. '09 same amount of deals with $104M avg.

Wall St Transcript: In '04 world investment in clean E was $42B. Should be over $200B in '10. But US policy (Republicans) has kept US clean E industry from scaling up equal to global competition. I guess we just like to give and give some mores.

We pretty much lucked out this hurricane season. 4 years on sailboats in Florida meself mateys (early '90's).

Wells Fargo to fund $100M for US solar projects for '11, joining Morgan Stanley and Citibanco in shifting investments from dirty to clean E. G. $100M. Don't get crazy. It's a start I guess.

Mass production of Chevy Volt started today.

US homeowners can get low-cost E audits to get fed-insured loans for upgrades. Announced today.

October budget deficit (US) $140B. Down 20% from last year.

Did anyone know Obama's goal is cutting deficit to 3% of GDP. We're at 10%, last I checked. How the hell did we have budget surpluses at the end of the last millenium?!

Massive gamma ray bubbles at center of the galaxy. OURS! They span (spam?) 50k light years. Could be black hole eruption or outflow from star formation burst. Spans over half the visible sky. Seen them? Maybe millions of years old. Found out by Fermi gamma ray telescope launched in '08. Gamma rays the highest energy form of light.

Preliminary proposals from debt commission out. Social security, medicare cuts, increase in gas tax, et al. Twill be fun.

OK. More profit taking from last week. Dow down 60. Not an ouch for clean E. In fact, oil's attempt to stop the clean E economy in Calif died with Prop 23 last Tuesday. Thank God and common sense.

STUFF

JASO (trading flat today) reported revenues 189% higher than the year-ago Q, EPS was 260% higher. Already up over 20% in November. I recommend buying on any pullback. If you don't mind a Chinese company, that is. Not that I do. As long as its clean energy. JASO's solar.

Solyndra - a US solar startup - won $.5B of federal aid for a robotic factory and now are shutting their older plant and laying off about 200 workers. Sad state of affairs, but it's the reality of competing with continually lowering solar costs.

US military: climate change will hit especially hard in areas already hurting from food insecurity, poor infrastructure and unstable regimes. Horn of Africa region and Yemen most so.
