NYT/E&E Publishing: Thanks to DOE's PNNL we now can get grid signals @ 30 times/second to avoid blackouts (now avoided by an hour or more). Anticipating EV's. Invented 5 yrs ago. Synchrophasor tech. DOE gave $147M in Recovery Act matched grants to 10 phasor projects last year in N. American Synchrophasor Initiative. Phasors measure power flow, time stamped by sats, to synch readings from generators even hundreds of miles apart. Data goes to super computers to guide grid operators. PNNL a $1B/yr lab. 5k employees. History goes back to plutonium for Nagasaki and cold war arsenal. Interest in grid began in '92. And most folks will never know about all this stimulus help where it was truly needed.
