Axiom Capital: a number of solars currently experiencing order cancellations out of Germany.

NENED entered into agreement with DOE NREL. So. Still in development and there are competitors, but they may be a Wall Street darling.

T Bone Pickens sees $300 oil in 10 years if we don't repent. "We can get to 8M 18-wheelers on NG in 7 yrs, which would cut our OPEC feed in half." We got to the moon in 7 years. Who remembers that?

China says it will cut nukes' '20 target from 80GW. Didn't say how much. Plans to increase solar target from 20GW. Didn't say how much. At this point, wouldn't we all just say give us coal? Hopefully cleaner? 27 nukes in development in China. 50 more planned.

NRC since '03 has allowed phasing out equipment that eliminates H at nuke plants. Containment structures strong enough. Uh huh. H "recombiners" since 3-mile island. But the industry wanted to save money. Who doesn't? Over half US operators applied to drop the recombiners. '03 NRC rule change said plants can pump in N instead of air (80% N) because the H needs O to ignite. Some plants have "igniters" to burn off the H. It's all being looked at again.

Bandied-about facts:
Oil imports subtract $1B/day from US trade balance. Oil says 1M bls of domestic crude generates 1M jobs and contributes $30B to GDP. We've gone from 60% imported oil in '07 to 50% now. Our elgen is all US. Yay. At least we have that right. 20% oil imports now from Canada, 10% from oil sands. Keystone pipeline to gulf refineries still to get go-ahead. 10% imports from Mex, Columbia, Brazil. 25% from Persian Gulf, N. Africa, Venezuela, Nigeria.

We cut oil imports in half from '77 to '82. Oil was 15% US elgen in '75 - 1.4mbpd. '75 E Act  mandated auto efficiency to double to 27mpg by '85. But the ball was dropped when oil prices came down in the '80's and '90's. Imports went from 27% in '85 to 60%. Of course, it made sense to buy their oil when it was that cheap. Our gas usage may actually have peaked in '07. Efficiency requirements now 35mpg by '20. Ethanol 9B gal/y in '08 to target of 36B in '22. And a basic ICE engine can get to 50mpg to replace 38% gas demand by '30 by doubling biofuel blending to 30B gal/yr by '30. (Check that 36B gal by '22). Our 8M trucks use 40B gal/y. It would take 5TCF/y of NG to replace that (2.3mbpd of oil). US NG reserves are 284TCF with fracking. But, of course, NG is needed first for residential and other heating. And then we would need NG pumps at our gas stations and other infrastructure. In '09 the US produced more oil than the previous year for the first time since '85. Gulf deepwater/Bakken/other. In '10 production rose 3%. One estimate that US will produce 2.4mbpd more by '16 on top of  '10's 8.6. Eastern gulf, Atlantic coast has 3.8B bls (equiv to Norway's reserves). And then there's Cuba's northern waters. 200M years ago, more or less, our S. Atlantic coast separated from Africa and there's a lot of oil over there off west Africa.

Well, I'm not out of news but it's opening day of baseball. I want a hot dog with catchup, mustard and relish. And a beer.

MGLT up 59. CCGI up 25. TSLA up 17 on an upgrade. JUHL up 15. They're working a lot of contracts. ICPR, NPWZ up 11. SOPW, AFPW up 10. 70% of SOPW was bought by LDK Solar. ABAT up 2. STUFF

Obama calls for 1/3 cut in oil imports over next decade. 3-4mbpd. More EV's, NGV's, new refineries for biofuels, new fuel-efficiency standards. Well, let's wish us all luck. Last week, Mr. P was chumming up with Brazil for their coming offshore oil. Oops. Also a call for 80% clean power by '35 from current 40%. He includes NG, clean coal in clean.

Anyway, 7 Gulf deepwater permits issued since moratorium ended, 12 pending and 24 awaiting more answers. And our flow from Bakken, the shale areas and a new area in CO, WY, NB is growing. But AK was down in '10 to <600kbpd. Peak was ~2mbpd in '88. And latest USGS report put National Petroleum Reserve figure at 896M bls that was previously estimated at 10.6B.

Cuba produces 60kbpd. But their Northern waters (or are they US waters?) hold est. 5-20B bls oil, 20TCF NG. With US sanctions, though, the US majors are excluded from developing. Cuba is talking economic changes, opening up. Things could get interesting soon.

Brit bank HSBC reports world may have no more than 50 years of oil left at current consumption rates. Current consumption. China is adding 1B cars (India, etc.) over how many years?

GE paying $3.2B for 90% of a French maker of pwr conversion, other pwr electronic equipment. Electrification market >$30B in '10. Industrial equipment uses >25% of US el.

ABB bought Baldor El (efficient motors) for $4.2B, virtual pwr plant developer Ventyx for $1B, who bought Obvient. All US comps.

Calif gov Brown set to sign 33% RPS bill into law, backing up Arnold's '09 exec order establishing same. Clean E now 15% of Cal's elgen.

And a bit of good news. The 3-yr-old drought in Cal is over. A 50-foot-plus snow pack. Maybe those fruits and veggie prices will fall. M hm.

Had 3-Mile Island's containment dome not been built double-strength because it was under an airport landing path, it may not have withstood the H explosion. IAEA in '04 estimated deaths from Chernobyl at 4K. An '09 more extensive review found deaths approaching 1M by '04, almost 170K in N. Am. If Fukushima #4 melts down, cesium-137 and strontium-90 would be floating around for centuries before decay. If #3, the plutonium will take 482K years. Fuku, unfortunately, is nearing Chernobyl levels of releases.

China led the world in clean energy investment in '10 @ >$54B. Germany 2nd @ $41B. US 3rd @ $34B. Italy 4th at $14B. $243B total. I believe the numbers include hydro, but I'm not sure if it includes nuclear.

UK's GDP was down .05% in 4Q. '11 forecast 1.7% growth. 4.4% (official) inflation rate double household income rise.

In '10, line losses in US grid cost ~$26B and 160M tons of extra CO2 emissions. Losses rise greatly during peak hours and tie up huge amounts of generation and transmission capacity, limiting new wind, solar access. Localized waste energy recycling (WER) can significantly relieve the problem. 1MW of WER gen (say at a manufacturing plant or industrial site) could displace up to 2.25MW of peak gen/transmission. DOE has ID'd roughly 200GW of potential US WER gen. Otherwise, we need $50B worth of new power lines for 10k miles. And no one wants new lines in their back yards. The US added all of 620 miles in the last 10 years.

STUFF

Fukushima reactor design is from the '60's. Smallest safety margin of any similar device, probably can't contain 90% of meltdowns. As we unfortunately are witnessing. US has 6 identical and 17 very similar plants.

China is building 2 "pebble-bed" nuke reactors. Instead of fuel rods, billiard ball-size fuel balls cloaked in protective graphite. Reactors stop on their own in emergency shutdown, avoid meltdown. Cooling by helium gas instead of water. Germany, US and S. Africa have tried the tech, but abandoned over tech problems or finance. A test reactor near Beijing operated for a decade without mishap. Waste also less radioactive than rods. China also buying one of world's largest U deposits in Namibia for $1.23B. They also will start taxing rare earth metals next month, adding >$100M/yr to costs. Finally, they imported >1mbpd crude from Saudis in Feb, up 10% year on year. Angola their 2nd top supplier @ <700kbpd.

Iraq sees oil production, export capacity doubling by '14. Indonesia crude output in Feb down 7% yr on yr to 785kbpd from 841. Venezuela wants to send 1mbpd to China w/in 3 yrs but would need a drastic increase in production (their output is declining). The US approved its 6th deepwater permit since the Gulf moratorium. Also, the oil/gas industry has nearly 7,200 permits to drill on US public lands that it has yet to use. Possible shortage of rigs, experienced fracking crews. Russia to double its oil exports to Japan to >100M bls this year and may redirect some of LNG planned for Europe to JP and may get Japanese firms to join Gazprom in exploring 2 massive gas fields.

17% of Germany's electric last year came from wind, solar, hydro and biogas digesters. They had >200k citizens in their streets over the weekend protesting nuke power.

First Wind dedicated Oahu's first large-scale wind farm. 30MW on 575 acres. Clipper Wind turbines. 20 cents/kwh PPA from Hawaiian El. Also a 10MW batt storage system to smooth power flux. Hawaiian El's Oahu peakload 1.25GW.

Scientists in US using bacterium to make hydrocarbons from CO2. Other biomolecular engineers at UCLA working on getting butanol production off of edible feedstocks and onto ag wastes and algae. Cool Plant Biofuels, backed by Google, to produce fuel from the same kinds of biomass.

Freshwater content of upper Arctic Ocean is up 20% since the '90's. I think that means glacier runoff and maybe more precip.

I guess one question before the world.

SUNDAY

Lots of debate on morning talking head shows over whether going into Libya was right thing to do or not. Thing is, we're in. Talk should be about what's next, which you can be sure is going on in lots of Sunday soirees. Can the world be better off without one more bastard dictator? Yup. Especially with oil reserves. Don't forget about PanAm 103. The bombing in the Germany bar. The "Line of Death" in the Gulf of Sidra. And the rest of his insanity. Hopefully, he's gone from history sooner rather than later. And, by the by, it's refreshing to see Europe's military picking up some of the tab. And we wait to see what the Arab League will contribute. As Bahrain, Yemen and Syria? continue in uprising while Hamas and Israel are going at it again.

Nuclear power. Japan put reactors right on a faultline. MAJOR faultline. And chose typhoon protection over tsunami at the plant with the most reactors in crisis. (The backup cooling power in the basement instead of the roof). If I read all the news right. And NO ONE on TV talks about Thorium reactors. Or Fusion. Or cold fusion. Or just dam alternatives to the frackin Neanderthal take it or leave it nuclear engineering we've been given. Yep. Nuke is dangerous as hell. But it's no GHGs and 24-hour power. I just believe we should look at Thorium, breeder reactors and fusion, hot and cold, and anything else in energy in an honest way. And I guess that's up to our servants in Washington. Or our honest corporations. How many do we have left?

Anyway, I'm watching the NCAA too. It's Sunday. But, going through my stock lists, so far I have 2 jump outs at me. HSOL and NEWN. My suggestion is check them out for yoself. Yes they are Chinese. But look especially at NEWN's rev and profit growth this year. And HSOL's 2-year chart. Have the Chinese stolen US tech? We're pretty aware of that by now. The Soviets were good at it until Reagan. Sometimes they buy it. Do they cheat however or whenever they can? Do they treat their employees like slaves? I don't know. Anyhoo, I'm looking forward to Kentucky v. Ohio State. Duke and Michigan now. Yay, verily, the madness of March.

From the "If This Is True" department:
A metric ton of Thorium produces as much energy as 200 tons of U or 3.5M tons of coal. A thorium reactor consumes its own waste and can scavenge plutonium leftovers of U reactors. Thorium a common element at rare earth mines. US, Australia has plenty of it. Cost savings over U fission processes. And weapons from thorium impractical. And if all this is true, when do we start using it? When we wake up I guess.

In late Jan, China released standards of rules, restrictions for polysilicon makers. Site selection, E consumption, enviro protection, capacity, etc. Serious fall-out to occur but ultimate increase in quality, enviro protection and decrease in production costs.

Russia now the largest oil producer in the world (9.93mbpd). And largest NG reserves. Saud has highest oil reserves (260B bls). Russia 60B. The math: 16 years of Russian oil left at present production. Canada 2nd in reserves (175B bls). Production now ~ 3.5mbpd. Africa may have last great oil fields on earth to tap.

And I can't give you firm numbers today. I'll give you an example why. UBRG closed Friday at .051 cents. I know that because I owned it. As I ate my microwaved little bowl of black beans, red kidney beans, barley, lentils, blackeye peas, collard greens, carrots, onions, cranberries and local-growned potato with extra sharp cheddar and slices of whole wheat bread with I Can't Believe It's Not Butter spread on them, I red about this:

the Brit Gov just completed a 2-yr study only to find that by 2050 global food supplies won't be sufficient to feed everyone. Food prod. must rise 70% to feed the 9B of us by then. Well, unless most of America goes on a diet. Conflict over land, water and energy will hamper food prod. And, by the by, the recent rise in food prices, the global econ "slump" and the floods and droughts forced another 115M peeps into poverty and hunger. >1B of us go hungry every day. And many die of it. Especially children. Govs are now stockpiling grains. Yr on yr, corn is up 83%, wheat 75%, soybeans 56%. Rice had a recent surge of 250%. Sugar @ 30-yr highs. 60 food riots in 30 countries in recent years. Megatrends: 1, rapid reduction in arable land; 2, fast growing population; 3, water shortages; 4, changing diets; and 5, decreasing crop yields. My thought is what about sucking out ocean water (through reverse osmosis plants) and piping it into land areas in need of ag water? We pipe oil and natural gas, we can surely pipe water. And the oceans are full of it. And we can power the osmosis plants with nuke, solar, wind, whatever. It could solve 1 and 3 and maybe 5 of the above-mentioned megatrends. What we seem to have is a lack of will and/or leadership from our elected officials. It sickens our souls. It hurts our hearts. Where is the care?

Ay carumba. Onward and upward, fellow pards.

World PV solar production capacity increased ~70% in '10, to near 30GW. One estimate 35GW by mid '11 w/ projected installs 1/5 of that. '10 installs were >double '09. Possibly more bankable figures 25GW production, 17-18GW demand.

Italy, as reported, scaling back solar incentives and now France dropping solar FITs for biogas. 20% drop for solar. Maybe 500MW/yr cap. They installed 720MW in '10, doubling '09. 1GW total installed. (800MW installed in US in '10).

Wind installs in France remained steady freddy @ ~1GW last year. Total cap now 5.7GW, 1.8% total grid supply. 3.7GW wind, 4.1GW solar awaiting grid connect.

Germany still has 3.5GW/yr install target for solar or wind I'm guessing. Est. 7GW installed and supplying 40% of world demand. That may be solar. Go you Germans.
