In real terms, $100 oil the highest price since '84. And we keep hearing of all the oil not being drilled in the USA because of Washington - especially Democrats. Where IS this oil? Is it the shale oil that takes more water than available where it is, let alone the aquifer contamination problem? Or is there something the "leaders" are not telling us?

Try asking Iran to give back the drone that flew over their country. The President did. Can you get your head on that? What's the joke?

GOLD

Bloomberg says gold went down. Yahoo says gold went up. Just sayin.

A THOUGHT

If the USA - still the world's largest economy (by way far) - comes back to itself and says buy American and puts in the ways to make it happen and we stick to it, the world will come back to us. One way is zero tax on manufacturing. Santorum's idea.

Just a thought.

STUFF

Well, watched the Republican debate last night. It's a tough choice for a potential new leader. I really don't know whom I would choose. I guess Romney. Newt's just a little too Newt. Or something. Perry seems to get too much brain freeze. Santorum's too young. Paul's too old. Bachman is Bachman.

And then we look at Obama's 3 years. Total Dem control in Congress with the economy on the brink. OK, they did the stimulus and really, came up short on it. Then he decides to do health care. I think that was the deal he made for Ted Kennedy's endorsement. Unfortunately it took what, a year to get done? And who likes it? Then he chose financial regulation. And we got Dodd-Frank. What the hell, we can't even enforce Sarbanes-Oxley. Meanwhile, the economy clawed back what it could.

Then with the Republican comeback we got gridlock and patchwork government, no growth, deeper and deeper debt and brinksmanship.

He did get bin Laden. And Kadafi is gone. Iraq is over. Afghanistan seems controlled. But he lost Egypt it looks to Islamic extremism. And the drone tech to Iran.

Well, there's more to come. Fasten your seat belts.

STUFF

IKEA to grow their solar presence to 75% with plans to install solar on all their southern US locations.

TVA added 2 new solar generating sites.

40-50% of cost of owning/operating rooftop solar is admin expenses. Much of it from local govt's - permitting and zoning - financing, metering, grid connect. DOE trying to lower these costs. Recently awarded $12.5M in grants to help.

Durban climate talks in overtime as US resists formal treaty.

TX regulators approved plan that would cut off water flow to rice farmers. I guess that's from the drought.

Total net worth of US households was down 4.1% - $2.2T - in 3rd Q this year. $7,800 per person. About the rate when it fell $16.3T from early '07 to early '09. It came back some since, but after 3rd Q, still down $9.4T - 14% from '07 high. Since Dec '07, median household income is down 6.8% after inflation. Ratio of household debt to personal income now 154%. In '10, 2.6M more Americans fell into poverty, an all-time yearly record. Total govt debt, biz debt and consumer debt now >$50T. It was $5T in '80. Since '76, total trade deficit >$7.5T. US fiscal gap est. to be $211T in decades ahead. Total assets of all citizens, businesses and all levels of govt  ~$70T. FRIDAY CLOSE

(stock #'s in %)

Market up 186/50/20. Volume below avg. But it was a Friday. Oil up over $99. EU deal or whatever. Everything is up in the air.

For instance, CCGI up 65 - an EV charging comp - while ECTY - also an EV charging comp - imploded. PPRW up 33 on 1k shares. UBRG up 16. And last I tried to buy it they wouldn't allow it. CABN up 14 more. OK. Here's a stock up 33 in what, 3 days? On a press release. I do love the tech, don't get me wrong. But there are no revenues. And it's a very thin volume with a horrendous spread. But I hope they start selling the tech. JUHL up 13. That was a delayed reaction to news days ago. But, again. no volume. ASYS, WEST up 7. That made sense. Though solar is a pariah lately. And installers are making no money except RSOL. ASYS is a different story. ENOC, BWEN up 6. Both right there, in my umble estimation. BIOF up 3. Made sense to me. LSCG up 2. Just a reaction to latest drop. Maybe they're just a little overpriced still, though absolutely plenty of potential. Again, their 3-year chart will tell you something here. Double bottom forming up. And AETI made another new high.

CPWY down 37. What does CPWY do? I'm still not clear on it. I don't think they have revenues but then again they actually may. MGLT down 28. Great tech. No revenue. 1K shares traded. CBWP down 26 on 1,200 shares. AMLM down 25. Maybe on GM Volt's lithium batt trouble and Morgan Stanley dumping on EV tech or maybe because they have no revenues either though looking for lithium. CRGE down 21. Whatever. ECTY down 15. Might be a bottom. Who the hell knows. AMEL down 14. Another lithium miner with no revs. APWR down 10. There's a story. SATC, XSNX down 8. SATC a new low. Eye on them. PEIX, EFOI down 6. EFOI a new low. NENE down 3 more. Look for a press release.

Weekend it up, pards.

ECTY

1:51P. ECTY imploding. Down 19% but hit .89 cents. Now down 22%. No news I've seen. Is it from Morgan Stanley crapping out on the EV rollout or internal to ECTY?

Market down 198/52/26. Avg. volume. Oil below $98. Germany rejected EU draft. Lack of ECB bond buying. So it's all about Europe.

QTWW up 26 after reporting. Revs up from shipments to Fisker, the latest govt embarassment. Losses also up. CABN up 20. They're looking like NENE used to. Put out a press release when you want a big gain. On 17k shares. Sure, if their tech is righteous, let's see the revenues. ZAAP up 16 on 11K shares. XSNX up 13. BFRE, OOIL up 12. All the wannabees today. Or most. NENE up 2. PEIX up 1. AETI made another new high.

VNDB down 69. That's a bad day. HEVV, BHWX down 18. WEST down 11. Here's a formula. Short a clean energy stock and then announce RFK Jr. joining the board. Though who wants to own a solar installer. CSUN down 10. Back to the bottom. PWER down 9. Getting there. CREE down 8. Morgan Stanley downgraded. Guess what. Buy it. HSOL down 8. O those Chinese solars. CSIQ down 7. Ditto. LSCG down 7. FSLR down 5. Bottoming with Buffet buyout? BIOF down 5. ENOC, BWEN down 4. ABAT down 3, new low.

Happy trails, pards.

STUFF I

Morgan Stanley and TSLA. In March, MS set target of $70-135. Said TSLA had potential to make the "Big 3" the "Big 4". What a change today, huh? Think they made 10% today on their shorts? No wonder investors are leaving stocks. Of course, the answer is taking the opposite position of whatever big Wall St analysts foist on us. Or don't even pay any attention to them. And, actually, TSLA is just correcting back to 50-day lines after 50% runup since Sept.

FERC ruled Bonneville discriminated against wind farms when it unplugged their power recently. O no, not discrimination.

Fun fact: over last 30 years, peak attendance at national parks has moved forward by avg of 4 days. That reflects rise in park temps. Well, at least no pepper spraying yet.

EPA to link fracking with water contamination in WY in announcement today. Watch out ND.

Enviro riders remain sticking point in Congress' omnibus appropriations talks.

Uncertainty over grant program extension has already hurt US clean energy biz.

Polar bears turning to cannabalism to cope with shrinking food supply.

DOE granted 1st West Coast LNG export permit.

Decision delayed on Alberta oil pipeline to BC. Where's the Keystone talk?

Goldman downgraded the coal sector. Huh. Sell your coal. (I actually did get a lump of coal one Christmas from my brother.)

UN: women, Africa seen as frontline victims of global warming. Women won't stand for that.

Had price of oil merely kept pace with inflation, it would have been $30/bl last year. Huh.

Global nuke gen capacity fell 10GW in last year from record 376GW. 10GW is half of global solar market or 1/4 of peak Calif ISO load.

EU still considering banning Iran oil imports. ~500kb/d of 2.6mb/d of Iran exports.

O. Late news. In spring, Estonia's biggest energy company bought Oil Shale Exploration, it's land and research in E Utah.

POET exec: ethanol industry will survive loss of tax credit. I guess. It's been going to refineries.

American Airlines expects to begin 1st biofuel-powered flights in mid-'12.

Branson: scaling biofuels for av "not so difficult".

Christie: Romney the only one who can win. I think he's right.

And so we go, pards. Onward and upward.

2:16P

I think ENOC is a buy here. I think it's forming a 3-day double bottom. It could go all the way back to $9.40, though, so keep an eye on it.

Elsewhere, CABN now up 10%. WEST down 11 (on putting RFK Jr. on board?). HEVV down 21 (probably close to bankruptcy). And VNDB down 51. What a market.

STUFF TOO

Lots on the table, pards.

IEA: 1/3 of world's energy could be solar by '60. And we could all be living in the sky by '60.

Last Thursday, US Senate voted unanimously to penalize any foreign bank that does biz with Iran's central bank. Well, at least they all can agree on something. On to the House. Obama, though, already has wagged his finger.

Israeli scientists extracting algae from Red Sea put it in sunlight and salt water to make cosmetics, diet supplements and food colorants high in anti-oxidants. O that Israel-Red Sea thing. Is Red Sea still inside Egypt?

IHS Global Insight report: US oil/NG shale boom will create "870K jobs, $118B econ growth next 4 years". Gas from shale now 34% of US production, $76B of US GDP last year. Shale gas will lower electricity costs avg. 10% by '17. Probably for the utilities, not us.

Last month, N Dakota passed legislation and set aside money to sue the EPA if it tries to regulate or halt Bakken fracking. The wild north plains.

Calif Gov Brown recently fired top 2 enviro regulators because drilling permits dropped >70% last few years. Boy, that's a turn.

Senator Imhoffe: "I'm happy to bring the good news of complete collapse of the global warming movement and failure of Kyoto process". Well, maybe he can next report the temps have stopped rising.

Supreme Court weighing ownership of MT riverbeds (probably over the recent oil spill).

XSNX imploding. Are they real. Or memories. And there was one other thing. But I'm 64. I forgot it. Will you still love me, will you still care, when I'm 64. McCartney.

DECEMBER 7

I keep a 1945 wheat penny in my wallet. To always remind me of one of the greatest years of the United States of America. 1776 was a great year. 1783. 1788. 1803. 1865. 1919. And then '45. I'm looking for coins from the other years. Had an 1888 Morgan silver dollar once. That year my grandfather bought the family biz from great grampa. 6 wagons and 6 teams of horses for 16 hundred dollars. Grampa was 18.

Anyway, I guess my point is the United States of America will have another great year to honor. Maybe it was '01. O, we've honored that all right. '74 we did get Dick Nixon out of the White House. This year we're ending our Iraq engagement. But I'm looking for another '45. The end of war itself. On Earth. Wrote a frackin novel about it.
So, pards. Remember Pearl Harbor today in some way. And maybe keep a special US penny in your wallet. Because the United States of America has to be the greatest idea and land for humankind in history.

LATE SUNDAY

IF US citizens will start paying attention to buying US products we could maintain our world leadership. Let alone create jobs. Buy American. Look at the labels. Look at the back of the tab. Look wherever at whatever you have to. But let's buy American.

WATCH LIST

BWEN
COMV - good rev gains last quarter - on their bottom.
ECTY (if they get through 50-day lines here).
CREE - back at bottom, Goldman says buy.
EFOI - big drop last few days back to bottom area.
ELON
ENOC - top pick - extremely good rev gains last Q - double bottoming.
LSCG - when the recent slide down stops.
MXWL - price implosion this month after new highs.
PWER.
WEST - back down at bottom.
XIDE - bottom.
ZAAP - recent selloff and Friday gain maybe the turnaround.
ZOLT - bottom.

Of course, much depends on the entire market and the stop of the down trend. I don't see yet what will stop it except the charts - we're back near the other bottoms of this year.

Happy hunting.

STUFF

Stuffed, actually, from Thanksgiving dinner and leftovers. Hope your reflux isn't too bad. O yea, on to stuff.

Electric from clean E and renewables got $187B worldwide last year, topping $157B for NG, oil and coal. $66B in subsidies for clean E/renewables. But financial austerity measures in at least 10 countries will cut spending in "green" by $45B through '15. Check that out I guess.

The only American-owned company capable of enriching Uranium asking US govt for help to modernize its plant and stay in biz. USEC has a plant in Paducah (Kentucky) using '40's tech. And they have an old site with a shuttered plant in Piketon, OH. They want to build a new one there and use giant centrifuges. Centrifuges use ~95% less el than old tech. They want $2B loan guarantee. American utilities have been discussing signing supply contracts directly with Russia. Huh. What do you think about this? 500-word essay please. Yea, if I were a professor at YNOT University.

Sauds announced they're halting their $100B oil expansion program, saying the requirement to increase production has "substantially reduced" in face of emerging new oil and gas supplies.

Sundrop Fuels announced $450M biofuels project in Louisiana using forest waste and hydrogen from NG. Plant will make 50M gal/y of gasoline adaptable to existing pumps, pipelines, engines and infrastructure. Online '14.

On airplanes there's a cock to drain the fuel out of the bottom of the fuel tank to get the water out. Maybe we now need that in boats and cars and trucks. With ethanol and biofuels. Just wondering, pards. Wonderin. Wonder what's coming next. Brought to mind a couple stories but one was not so funny.

Well, I trust you all had a good Thanksgiving. And enough anti acid.

Happier trails, pards. Onward and upward.

Google gutting its campaign focused on cutting costs of concentrating solar power as a result of 40% drop in PV solar costs over last year. Program was launched in '07. But staying with $850M invested so far in clean energy including 392MW CSP plant under construction in Cal.

FSLR announced their cumulative production has reached 5GW (66M solar modules). Enough to power 2.5M homes.

BCON says they weren't forced by finances to declare bankruptcy. They say they got "caught in Solyndra firestorm". Really.

Brazil suspended Chevron's drilling rights over that oil spill.

23 governors, 369 organizations have expressed their support for 4-yr extension of production tax credit for wind power. Current PTC expires in '12 unless Congress acts. Last time they let it lapse installs dropped over 73%. Over last 6 years US production of wind turbine components grew 12x to >400 facilities in 43 states. Shifted manufacturing jobs from overseas back to US.

Fla Power and Light filed for '12 rate redux due to lower NG cost projection. Fuel costs projected to be $460M lower. FPL's residential bills >20% lower than national avg, lowest of FL's power utilities. Huh. Are these guys just the most honest and moral?

Fed FY10 support for energy (2x FY07):
Direct outlays to producers or consumers - $14.3B
Tax breaks/incentives - $16.3B
R&D - $4.4B
Loans, loan guarantees - $1.6B
El programs (TVA, Bonneville, etc) - $.6B
Total >$37B. ~$21B went to el production; $16B to el transmission/distribution, conservation/efficiency and auto programs. 2/3 went to non-hydro renewables and clean E. The rest to fossil.

1st new US oil refinery in over 3 decades to be built in N. Dakota.

STUFF

Chile, Australia dominating lithium production. New tech can extract lith from brine that geothermal plants inject into ground after the steam is produced. And at lower cost than lowest Chilean production ($1,500/ton). USGS analysts have suggested battery-grade lithium worth $5-6k/ton. Symbol Materials the comp to look at (they also extract manganese and zinc). Itochu (I taught chu) took 20% stake last year.

Chia Obama. On store shelves near you. Kid you not.

China issued white paper before UN climate soiree in S. Africa. Said poorer countries accounted for 57% of emission reductions ( no time period reported). China says they achieved 20% redux in C emissions from '05-'10. Plan to cut 17% more by '15. Measured in per unit of GDP. Also said that despite financial crisis, rich countries should still try to contribute to $100B fund to help poorer countries finance energy efficiency improvements. Well, with a $2T cash stash, I guess they have some opinion to wield.

Examination of Obama's decision to reject tougher smog standards showed how his re-election interests can influence policy. Maybe even Keystone pipe, huh?

Nebraska OK'd new pipeline standards and setting up state review of Keystone pipe.

STUFF

Chevron said a mistake of calculating oil pressure caused the oil spill off Brazil coast. "Deposit pressure underestimated". Isn't that what happened in the GOM with BP? Well, besides faulty, hurried construction. Chevron leak fully contained, but slick reached 882 bls reportedly. On migratory route for whales, dolphins. Slick moving away from shore. Well, Rio won't be slicked. Greenpeace says satellite pics show "spill 10x bigger than stated." What's new.

Judge approved BCON's bankruptcy plan to sell its primary working asset - 20MW energy storage flywheel - to try to pay back $43M fed loan.

World Meteorological Organization: GHG's hit record level in '10. CO2 now 389 PPM (parts per million), up from 280 in 1750. Yep, 1750. The year. Who measured CO2 PPM in 1750? There's a who wants be a millionaire question huh? UN climate conference opens up next week in S. Africa. 450 PPM is the point of no return they say. But 350 the first danger point already behind us. '10 was 23 PPM higher than '09. Avg. increase in '90's was 1.5/yr. Since 1750, CO2 concentration up 39%, NOX up 20%, Methane up 158%. Fossil fuel burning, loss of forests, use of fertilizer the main culprits.

STUFF

An average 23 manufacturing facilities were shut down in the US every day last year. Average of 15/day over last 10 years. Since '01, over 56k facilities lost. Since '76, US has run up a $7.5T trade deficit. In '79, there were 19.5M manufacturing jobs in the US. Now 11.6M. US has lost average 50k manufacturing jobs/month since China joined the WTO in '01. The new World Trade Center tower will be made with glass from China and steel from Germany. In '08, 1.2B cellphones were sold worldwide. None made in US. I think we need a zero fed tax on manufacturing for at least ten years. I wish the President would propose it. I can't imagine a Republican being against it. But the Dems might stop it for some dam reason. And so it goes.

UK moves to abruptly slash feed-in tariffs for smaller and rooftop solar installs coming under increasing pressure as opposition gets more organized.

USDA awarded >$8M to 4 hydropower projects in CT, OR, UT and VT under Rural Energy for America Program. USDA also halted sales of mineral leases in OH's Wayne National Forest. Sets Utica shale development back a year for another fracking analysis. Could have created 200k jobs next 3 years and provided OH with $500M in revenue. If fracking poisons water supply, absolutely stop it, yes. But so far I understand the fracking takes place BELOW the aquifers. But, of course, better safe than sorry.

Senators have intro'd bills to provide additional $5B of tax credits for US manufacture of clean energy tech and 20% investment tax credit up to $40M for energy storage systems connected to grid, 30% ITC of up to $1M for on-site storage.
