Well, as you probably know, the market started up 100 Dow then crumbled but stabilized down. Pretty much the economy.

Take your pick. HYEG up 45. BFRE up 42 more. Quadrupled now. 9 days. I hope some of you bought it when I tooted it. GCHK up 28. Just going by chart, I'd say you could pick up 10 percent near term. Or more. When it comes back down. TSPG up 22. Flat for a year, what the hell. WTWO, AXPW up 20. The latter a new entry into the double-digit panoply. FDEI stayed up 16 with pretty fair volume. Still trying to bust through those 50-day lines. ESLR jumped 14 off bottom. Heads up. GSPI up 13. CSIQ up 12 on upgrade. Well, I guess they're over the financial glitch. Bust thru 1 200-day line. IAUS up 12. Whatever. VLNC up 11. Sprung off 200-days. Chart looks good. Recommend. Especially on comeback on the morrow morn. Almost waxing Irish am I? O yea, they have financial trubble as does Spain in the nuze. Things talked of months and months ago coming to fruit. Vegetables are ready for harvest too. AWNE stayed up 11. SESI up 10. APWR scooted up 9, heading for their 200's. Buy the comeback. JASO and SOLF gained some mores. WNEA ended up flat.

RVBF down 35 on 1k shares. What's that? What exactly is a $10 trade ripping off 35% stockholder's equity? Gotta love it goes only so far. Curse, Maybe they're one of the sham wows. AFPW down 22. They have actual business as I understand it. Aluminum-air fuel cells I think. Aluminum is more expensive than zinc. But they at least found applications and buyers of. IFXY down 20. So were AQNM and SNRY but IXRY had 12M shares traded. WBRE down 16. Been going down all year. LEOM down 14. No volume. SLTZ down 13. Never herd another werd about Buda Solar. NCEN down 12. Had that recent jump now rebottomed. Go fig.

And that's the way dubble-didj clean E investing wuz today. Happy trailers pards and pardettes.

Globe's clean E revs '09 $530B v. '08 $534B. China added 37GW clean E in '09, more than any other country. Globe's wind capacity up 32% '09, most yearly gain since '01, 1/3 of gain in China.

The stimulus (US) allocated $3B to state energy offices to spur clean E and efficiency. Year prior was $25M. By July of '10 ~7% spent: DOE's IG audit. G, too much change too fast? DOE had 7 employees to oversee and hired 13 more. Competitive bidding added 3-6 months to process. Thank God for that huh.

"Unconventional NG" - the shale NG I presume - could suppress clean E for a decade. Water, pollution issues. Could see sub-$6 NG for next decade.

Solar PV was 70% off-grid in '92. 95% on-grid in '08.

MIT study says there's enough uranium for the nuke buildout. They don't like recycling fuel (breeder reactors). And want $700M/yr for R&D. Who doesn't. Industry exec says recycling is a solid case and will happen w/ or w/out gov when the market's right. MIT says eliminating financial risk premiums could keep cost under $4/W to build. I'm sure the gov would love to pick that up for the insurance industry. MIT still wants central spent fuel storage and staying with present light water reactor tech. France, Japan, UK, other nations are already recycling fuel. China's main nuke company plans to invest $160B to expand over next 10 yrs. Nuke Power Corp of India is ready to sell pressurized heavy water reactors of 220 & 540 MW capacity to other countries. Russia and China have fast breeders.

FRIDAY

(stock #'s in %)

Friday was all about the big dogs. Clean E stocks mostly were put aside for later. Only 2 out of the 200 stocks I follow had gains over 10%. And, as you know from following this blog, every day gives us at least 5. CGYV was up 12. And MGLT was up 44 on $250 traded.

There were 11 double-digit downers. CDTI down 16. GAZU down 11. GTLL down 50. HLXW down 11. ICPR down 11. NCEN down 10. PSUD down 16. RNNM down 14. SLRE down 41 on a $3 trade! Does that make ANY sense? TSPG down 15. And XPGH down 13.

Obviously, there's not much light shown on these companies in the major media. Some of them still are shams or shammy, even I know that. Many still deep in development stage. But there are also many that are doing leading technology and many of them making real money and even profits. Hopefully, as more people decide they want to be part of the clean energy wave - remember the internet wave? - we are going to get much better results as investors investing now.

STUFF

GSPI to build 2M gal/y cellulosic ethanol plant - largest yet.

Republicans in Congress voted against 8 new tax cuts for small biz this yr, called for repeal of small biz tax cuts in health bill (repeal of total bill), and had blocked the small biz jobs bill to be signed this coming week as long as they could. I'm starting to think let's give the Democrats 2 more years. Though, truly, votes should be cast for whom we think the best person in each contest. Let's do that. Let's see how that works. Yep, takes a lot of paying attention to. Let's do it for our fighters in Afghan and Iraq and elsewhere. Hoowah.

GE's Immelt says we have to have an energy policy. We need a price on carbon and a clean E policy open to all clean E techs. He praised the stimulus effort on its clean E provisions and the new DOE. He said we need to tighten up research foci and is critical of regulatory framework between FERC and states.

California approved 33% share by '20 for clean E.

A fleet management comp, EDF and Green Driver combining to reduce fleet GHG emissions 20% next 5 yrs. 3M vehicles in corp fleets. Would reduce emiss 10M metric tons. Transportation is 28% GHG emiss (US).

Hitachi and Panasonic are forming a smart grid alliance. Smart grid mart to grow to ~$10B by '15. $5.6B in '10.

Upgrades to Ohio River dams for el to cost >$5/W. 3 underway. Can increase turb efficiencies ^10% while reducing fish death. 13-17 blades now. Research on 3 blades now but will probably end up 4-7. A 300MW project in Peru for run of river (no dam).

Japan gave in to China's rare earth materials cutoff and gave back the ship captain. The dispute is over fishing grounds off contested islands. I don't think we've seen the last story of those rare earth elements and China's monopoly of them.

Illuminex' crystalline silicon nanowire solar equipment gets efficiencies comparable to current solar @ 50-75% less cost. Still in lab.

Solazyme delivered 20k gal algae diesel to Navy on '09 contract and announced contract for 150k gals more in '10 and '11. NASA looking at $10M, 2-yr project with Navy to R&D offshore algaefuel production.

Hertz to roll out EV rental programs, full-scale deploy in '11.

Kuwait and Russia signed a memo of co/op for nuke E. Um. Didn't the US liberate some country back a while ago?

China utility-scale solar plants breaking through 15 cents/kwh. >70% winning bids won by government-controlled enterprises.

Germany's newest offshore wind farm installed. 21 2MW turbines. Plan to develop 10GW offshore by '20, 25GW by '30. New farm w/ 80 5MW turbines under construction. 30 farms have received approval. No room left onshore.

IKEA building Colorado's largest single geothermal building.

Lots of clean E commitments thru Clinton Global Initiative this past week. I guess we miss the budget surplus and amazing growth in wealth of the late 90's and give Bill the personification. Of course, he had the end of the cold war and the invention of the internet at his back. But however the clean E revolution comes, Godspeed.

LED exec: "LED's will be 10% today's cost in 3 yrs".

Fluorine batteries coming before end of this year. 2-3x the power of lithium, more power on demand.

Toll Bros. opens 1st home w/ installed solar in Calif. Sun Run leases, maintains, insures the systems, owner pays ~$40/mo, saves $50-100.

Green Plains (GPRE) is trying algae production from their co2 emissions.

World's oil production has been effectively flat since '04. And world biofuel supply not much better - 1.8M bls/day equivalent in '10 going to 2.4M in '15.

Nuke el generation - world - is 7.6% of total, not the 14% I reported recently. 370GW.

Congress now is allowing geothermal producers the same energy credit as solar - 10% goes to 30% thru '16. Why they didn't in the first place beyond me.

Looks like the Cape Cod wind development will be coming in at better than $5/W.

TVA plans more nuke, less coal. I guess there's no more room for dams.

A $2B power plant proposed in Calif will use dirty coal and petroleum coke (hard leftovers from refineries) to produce 250MW and hydrogen. More NOX emissions than a NatGas plant. 90% CO2 sequestration possible as liquid injected into nearby empty oil reservoirs. BP a partner. State permit last hurdle.

A doctors' organization joined an environmental group in Texas to advocate for tougher EPA rules on coal ash. And a new coal plant is the first in Tex in 30 yrs "because of NG prices". Um. NG is still under $4 and talk is the shale gas and other new gas finds will keep it low. Let alone a solar plant for the area (San Antonio). Nothing about sequestration there. Finally, Texas' AG is back to court to block Fed GHG limits - "yet to prove that curbing emissions is in the public interest". Give us a break.

Solar in or on buildings (BIPV & BAPV) is estimated to grow over 10x by '16. ~2.4GW and $4B/yr then, global. 215MW in '09.

A bipartisan bill intro'd in Senate to require utilities to produce at least 15% of el from "renewables" (biomass included) by '21. A majority of states already have equal or better standards. Biomass can include a lot of stuff. O well, it's hard to lead elephants to water if they don't want to go.

Texas spending $5B to expand its grid to allow wind from the panhandle to double to 18GW by '13. The "Southern Cross" line to be direct current 400 miles to Mississippi, then up to 3 500kV AC lines to utilities serving 10 states. Pattern Energy Group. Now THAT's more like Texas.

Canada to end '10 with 750MW new wind capacity. $1.7B invested. I get over $2/w. And wind gives electricity ~ 1/3 of time.

Western Washington U. research could cut solar cost to 10% of current. Plastic polymers with special dyes take in photons, then transport via silicon chips to electricity. More efficient also on cloudy days. 3-yr $1M NSC grant to develop. $1M over 3 for project that could cut solar cost 90%. Hm. What if we make that $100M?

Adjusted projection: China to add 108-132GW wind by '20. Not so much as previously projected. UK target increase of 28GW by '20. 50/50 offshore and on. Even though actual wind costs $6/w we go forward (1/3 capacity actual generation).

US still has 22% of global manufacturing. 12% US GDP. $1.6T. 3rd exporter behind China, Germany. 8% globe's market share. US doubled manufacturing since '83 (even in inflation-adjusted $). With 26% fewer workers. US manufacturing workers 50% more productive than workers in the 11 next-best nations. USA!

Silicon recipe: 2.8 tons quartz, 1.4 tons coal, 2.4 tons woodchips into furnace yields 1 ton silicon. More or less.

Algae is 50% oil by weight.

Nuke world elgen (electricity generation) now 370GW - 14% of total elgen.

Chevron/Solar Millenium 1GW solar plant in Calif to cost $6B plus. It's that plus, ladies and gents, that may be starting to go nuclear. First elgen will be produced in '13. Parabolic trough tech. Must begin build before end of yr for 30% fed money. BLM last hurdle, to rule end of Oct the wurd.

Since '08, clean E/enviro's lobby has been outspent by fossil lobby over 7:1.

World GDP ~$70T. Amazin, A? What do we spend it on?

'05 housing - US - totaled $21T in assets. mortgage debt ~$15T. How much lost so far? We're probably totally even steven. Or even a little under the water.

To get 50% reduction CO2 by '50, world needs to invest ~ $800B/yr on clean E, efficiency, etal. Good news. We are. But 50% redux is bare minimum, allowing for 2-3 degree (C, I assume) increase, assuming no synergistic addition.

Energy storage market $1.5B in '10, est. $35B by '20.

Chinese solar products cost ~1/3 less than the costliest like Germany's Schott.

So far in Sept, DOE has awarded ~$180M for energy R&D. Good start.

US House has approved Rural Energy Savings Progress Act for $5B of fed loans for energy efficiency. Goes to Senate.

China making 1/2 of world's solar panels, wind turbines.

Gold quadrupled against all world currencies since '00. Whom do you thank? Bin laden? Bush? Republicans? Obama?

Well, I learned that PWAZ's agreement with Lawrence Livermore for Zinc-air fuel cell tech expired last Nov. Now they have "next-gen ZAFC tech designs". Still development stage and out of cash. Sorry sorry state. Maybe Zinc Air will go big and get it going. ARTX has the tech and selling them to military, but it's a small part of their biz. And I think MCEL is also trying to develop it for market. But they seem really under the weather too.

BYYDF's 10 gain today said to be from the small stake they took in a lithium and boron producer in China. Anybody remember Boron in Sohio's gas? Or the 20-mule team of Death Valley? Boron. Don't count it out. AONE also up 7 today, pokin out above their 50-day lines.

Zinc Air (private company) bought Lawrence Livermore rights to zinc-air fuel cell tech. Odd. PWAZ had them last I checked. Anyway, may they build them and sell them. Please. Zinc's cheap. Air's cheap. Totally recyclable.

MIT using carbon nanotubes to concentrate solar energy 100x more than current solar cells. Let us get that licensed out to a manufacturer, A?

Aug 29th I wrote that the gov should do tax incentives etc. et al to create jobs with the $2T+ cash stash of major American corporations. Today POTUS wants $50B for infrastructure with tax incentives. Construction jobs are down 33%. Just sayin.

Last week, Gov Rendell of PA announced $20M in state, fed investments to create 1,400 jobs in clean E. That comes in at under $15k each job. Good ruck.

Duke says it may close 7 coal plants in next 5 yrs.

2M smart grid meters now installed.

5% of Canadian homeowners have installed solar. Wonder what US number is.

Of 104 nuke reactors in US, not 2 the same design. Hello. Why is everything so dam stupid.

Canada mandated 5% ethanol blend starting December. O God. Will this shit ever end?

A subsidiary of Goldman Sachs sits on claims for over half of US BLM lands in Nevada for solar development. Cogentrix has yet to develop anything and has no plans to. 5 yrs ago BLM issued leases first come first let and didn't know what the hell they were doing. No solar development anywhere yet on their leases. Or. It was Bush administration plan. You think? What was Paulson's former firm before Treasury? Give us a break.

DOE says US has entered era of unprecendented expansion of wind power industry, world and US. US in '09 installed 10GW at cost of $21B - ~$2/W. Wind now delivers 2.5% of US power.

DOE (Sec. Chu): "cost effective, sustainable biofuels crucial to building clean energy economy". DOE and USDA together putting in $9M - million - to genetic breeding programs for cellulosic ethanol/biodiesel. First of all, biofuels are NOT clean energy. They may be cleaner than fossil. Maybe. And $9 million. Give us a break. Is this election politics?

When does the frackin stupidity end?

OK. Vacations over. Dow had hit it's last 200-day line Friday, Naz and S&P were close to it. So now we're going down with low volume because, they say, of renewed Euro concerns, like when the Greek "bailout" ends.

Anyway, clean energy stocks continue their dichotomous double-digit action.
