The 6 thousand year old empire of China today posted a plan for 50k tons/yr production capacity of polysilicon and 5GW/yr production capacity for solar cells by '15. Aiming to promote domestic solar energy and bolster their companies' competitive edge in global mart. They also plan to have 100GW of wind gen capacity connected to grid by '15. Sounds like the old empire likes clean energy.

Renewable Energy Group reported '11 earnings of $93M on $824M revenues v. $8M loss on $216M revs in '10. Sold 150M gal biodiesel, up 121%. 4Q revs $266M. Avg B100 price $5.20/gal last Q.

U of IL researchers say they've developed new maize hybrid to produce 15-20% more biomass given same fertilizer as commercial hybrids. The hybrid a mix of tropical and temporate maize with increased drought resistance, sugars in stalk and pest and disease resistance. That's pretty darn good research I must say.

American Coalition of Ethanol says ethanol is saving consumers 7 to 10 cents at the pump. Well, there was that report yesterday that Iowa ethanol producers are losing 11 cents per gallon made. Huh.

Tanzania shale gas reserves believed to be 60TCF. Mozambique NG reserve worth estimated $800B. Their GDP is $10B/y. Anadarko a big player in the area. Recall EIA just cut Marcellus reserve estimates 40% to under 500TCF. And only a fraction of that is economically recoverable. Bottom line: NG is practically everywhere around the world with fracking. It's time utilities convert to it and time we get it into trucks and buses and cars. Maybe even trains. Then there's fuel cells that run on NG.

Canada exported 1.5mb/d of oil as recently as Oct. Total production expected to be 3.5mb/d by '15. Bottom line: they can fill both pipeline to US and pipeline to West Coast for Asia.

Commerce Dept found massive surge of Chinese solar imports for a few months last year. That triggered 90-day retro rule if duties warranted. Final decision probably in Oct. A gate check next month.
