Greenland ice sheet last year melted the most in over 50 years, when records began: NOAA. Artic sea ice also shrank to its 3rd smallest area on record. Think (Norwegian EV builder) declared bankruptcy. 2-seater EV for $34k. Right. Came down from $40k. Couldn't find capital to continue. HEV to take a $35M charge on their investment. SATURDAY

Senate this week voted 73-27 to end ethanol tax credit and tariff. As of July 1. Veto threat from the White House. And it's an amendment to the econ development bill which is unlikely to pass. The House also passed a measure to cut DOA funds for blender pumps. Cellulosic biofuel $1/gal tax credit also scheduled to expire end of year (tho renewed in another Senate bill).

House Committee on Appropriations cleared FY12 Energy and Water Bill. $306B for DOE, $5.9B below Admin request, $1B below last year. Solar programs cut 63%, geothermal 62%, biomass 56%, wind 40%, H and fuelcells tech 9%. ARPA-E cut to $100M, $80M below '11. Course, that's just the House committee.

Um, aren't we still ~20% of world econ? O yea, we always have republicans dragging our feet into the future. I forgot. Clean E (not including nuke) now ~10% of US elgen in '09 (latest EIA data). Hydro was 66% of it, wind 17%, solar .02%. Prices for residential systems fell slightly to $6.40/w from 4Q10. Commercial-sized systems fell 6% to $5.35/w. Utility systems were down 5% to $3.85/w. Production was 348MW in Q1, up 17% from 4Q10.

STUFF

Last weekend we had our 57th annual meeting of the Bilderbergers.

Google's patented concentrated solar tech uses cameras and computers in the central tower to adjust the mirrors robotically for plant optimization. Sometimes, folks, the simplest of ideas are as elegant as the most complex.

Since the '06 peak, homeowners' equity is down from $14.7T to $6.9T. Lower than at the end of '99. Households also lost ~$2T in the market last 5 yrs. Tell me about it. And, not to forget, labor's share of national income is now at the lowest point in almost 100 yrs. What does that tell you?

An albino rabbit was born without ears near Fukushima recently. And dosimeters will be issued to 34k students in the fall. Welcome back to school, kids.

Only 13% of small biz owners in May said they planned to hire workers in next 3 months. Those planning to reduce workers rose to 8%. 23% said sales were higher in last 3 months, 36% said they were lower.

When Dimon (Goldman) last week asked, Bernanke admitted NO ONE had studied the cost of compliance with the new financial regs out of Dodd-Frank. Tuesday the Commodity Futures Trading Commission delayed until year-end implementation of rules covering derivatives. They were to take effect this 16th.

OPEC produced 200kb/d more - over 29mb/d - in May v. April, most gain from Sauds. Sure didn't cover loss from Libya. Way.

DOE yesterday announced almost $2B more in loan guarantees to 2 concentrating solar projects. $1.2B to Abengoa's Mojave project. $682M to Next Era Energy Resources' project in Riverside County CA. Power from both to be sold to PG&E.

Scientists discovered oldest black holes ever in space. Could be a joke in there. I'll let Woopy handle it. And there's missing sunspot activity.

Market had a day. Down 178/47/22. Volume got to heavy. Oil dropped $4. "Stagflation": werd from past.

Greece in violent financial pains, S.Yemen, Syria in chaos, Libya what, in stalemate? or is the fool just weeks from leaving? Just another day in Margaritaville, pards. Buck on up.

CLNO up 21 on not too shabby volume. Near triple since end of April. I'm not still sure what they do without checking for you but maybe they are for real. Up 21 today on volume was no easy trick.

MDTL up 13. Up 70 interday from the bottom on not bad volume. Still to me an enigma on biz. Are they selling their fuel cells? Building them? Something looks up here. Again, up today.

CBWP, RNNM up 11. Again, CBWP almost doubled intraday. Or is it interday? Or just too dang sweet for insiders? RNNM has a sweet chart going I must say. And very sensible volume at their price. Better than "crownbutt's" (yep, i nickname a lot of the stox). I do me think RNNM is for real.

APWR up 10. You could have caught them down lower after my mention in the open and be up maybe 5. Maybe this fall from grace is over. I have been mentioning it, don't ye know.

HEV, NGLPF up 9 on very appropriate volumes. HEV probably getting attention after the AONE upgrade. NGLPF just another good story - geothermal - beaten down to the bottom.

LEXG and NENE carried over for 7 more today. Both with no revenues. Gotta love the market. AONE carried through for 1 more. Could have made 4 intrainterday.

New 12-month lows: ABAT (up after close to even steven). EFOI down 20 (of course I sold at minimal profit after that buy at 50 cents). ALTI down 7. Running through money. ASTI down 6. Ditto. CREE down 3. You can buy them any time you like but you can never leave. ENOC, COMV down 2. The negawatt (is that werd OK, gangbangers?) twins. ITRI down 1. How low will they go? Probably a turnaround when the indexes trumble around in the 200-day lines. Trumble. New werd. A rumble amidst the tumble.

Okeydokey. Let's take a look see at the downs. CPST down 17 on a downgrade. Well, look at the numbers. CSOL down 15. QTWW down 14. Second bottoming. Or lebottoming. SPWRA, WTWO down 13. Never thought I'd see them paired up. Thing is, you'll see quicker gains with WTWO. But SPWRA says Total will help them double their market share. Something to check out. Then again, China solars are getting the same tech now that SPWRA has. And there's mighty competition out there on solar options. Nuff said. WTWO gets volume.

NPWZ down 11. Talk about stealth, Yahoo doesn't even report their trading. Another fuel cell enigma. NGBF down 10. They move around. I think they have real biz. HSOL down 9. Bottoming.

WEST down 7. Installers just don't make profits. Yet. They do make modules, tho, I think. They sure had a run. Again, we have to see how their AC modules sell v. the systems with the new 1% loss inverters. Good run, though. Helped me double up since March.

CSUN down 3. And AFPW down 2 after a morning run-up.

And that, my fellow souls, was the come and the go that I saw. Happy trails, y'all.

FINANCIAL CRISIS

Another take on the financial crisis from the Inquiry Commission Report:

10 essential causes.

1. A credit bubble started in late '90's with China, other large developing countries and big oil-producing nations building up huge surpluses. It created bubbles in US and Europe, causing interest rates to fall. Risk was repriced. Monetary and fiscal policy were loosened (the US, of course, at the turn of century was running budget surpluses) to record levels after 9/11 (and, obviously, we're still there).

2. The large housing bubble in the US (and Europe and many places around world). Price increases well above history norm.

3. Nontraditional mortgages, overly optimistic assumptions, poor origination practices, deception, fraud and lack of homebuyers' responsibility.

4. Failures in credit rating and securitizatioin transformed bad mortgages into toxic financial assets. Credit rating agencies erroneously rated the mortgage-backed securities and their derivatives as safe investments. (S&P, Moody's, etc. paid by investment banks to assign AAA ratings). Buyers didn't do due diligence. Fueled creation of more bad mortgages. Almost half of mortgages by the peak were bad.

5. Financial institutions became heavily concentrated in this risky housing market. Some knowingly, betting on higher prices. Some paid insufficient attention.

6. The financial firms became overly leveraged and or relied on short-term financing in repo and commercial paper markets for day-to-day liquidity. When the housing investments turned sour they ran into liquidity crises.

7. Contagion, "too big to fail", "systemic risk", "counterparty risk". Financial system vulnerability.

8. Unrelated financial institutions and firms failed because they had made similar bad bets on housing and were coming up with huge losses.

9. Financial shock and panic. September '08. Failures, near-failures and restructurings of ten firms triggered the global financial panic. Confidence and trust evaporated. The health of every financial institution in the US was questioned.

10. The shock and panic caused the severe economic downturn.

I'm adding the impact of 9/11 and the wars and spending on security and the ethos of our insecurity since 9/11 as contributing causes.

Bottom line: 9/11 drove us all nuts.

And, I'm going to say this again. 10M $30k/y jobs would cost $300B. Can't we think of something that would be worth the money spent for them to do? Can't all our well-paid professors and geniuses come up with something for all the unemployed? Instead of drawing unemployment.

WEEKEND LOOK SEE

AMRC may be ready to move up. Good numbers, good biz, down in price. Not a hot runner, but probably more appreciated these days.

APWR hit a new low and came up almost 10% on strong volume. Their ride down may be over.

ASTI like DSTI. All the way down. When will they get going. Or not.

Keep an eye on ASYS. Good numbers.

BCON up 7% on strong volume. The come back down maybe over.

BYDDF had volume on another new low. Does Buffett still own it?

CBAK came all the way back Friday on big volume.

COMV sprang back pretty well off another new low.

CREE back a buck off another new low.

CSIQ coming back to their low.

CSUN did.

ECOS keeps giving pct moves.

ENER struggling at their bottom like ASTI, DSTI with thin film solar, not sure if they have any batt biz left.

ENOC still bottoming.

ESLR. Is there hope?

EVCA down on volume. Still not sure of their biz strategy.

FSLR up 10% on the year.

FSYS with good numbers, on their lows too. Though PE is high.

HSOL another Chinese solar pushed back to double bottom.

IFXY a lot of volume Friday. Tied in with ITRI, who hit another new low on down volume.

JASO another Chinese solar coming back.

LEXG keeps coming down.

NENE is getting back to their lows, but they need to get some revenues going.

NGLPF doesn't look too bad with that latest deal.

PSPW still sandbags me.

SATC hit a new low.

SOLR's probably going back for a new high.

SPIR a new low.

UBRG .26 X sales. Steady sales and growing. Very cheap in comparative valuations.

WEST struggling with the solar installer problems after the big runs on the AC module news. Profit. But they could end up being big guys with Westinghouse behind them.

XSNX like ASTI, DSTI, ENER, ESLR. Who knows when or if.

And that's my look see. May we grow on, A?

Or if you are a genius, pick up the next triple or better. But the numbers are not boding well for the mart. So. I think we are in a correction. Dow to go down 10 to 20% from the tops.
